The Russian Blue kitten can be a genial and serene addition to any home. Russian Blue kittens are known for their smart, yet cautious personalities. They make great house cats and get along well with children and pets. It may take some time to see their true personalities. But, once revealed, you’ll get to know wonderful and loyal kittens.

History

Russian Blue Kitten on White Background-©123rf.com/Anna Utekhina Russian Blues originated near the Arctic Circle in Northern Russia. As a natural breed, they were well equipped physically to deal with the frigid Arctic temperatures. Their thick coats provided insulation against the cold air. Some folklore has it that Russian Blues were traded on ships headed to England. Other stories posit that the felines were favored by Russian and English royalty.

Physical Appearance

Russian Blues have a characteristic short, thick double coat of fur. They have gorgeous green eyes and sweet gentle faces. It seems as though Russian Blues are smiling when looking at their facial expressions. They can grow to be an average
build. And they have petite fine bone structures
with small paws and an angular facial structure.

Colors

Russian Blues are known for their beautiful soft blue-gray coats. They have gray colored noses and stunning green eyes.

Temperament

All Russian Blues have different personalities. However, most Russian Blues are shy and tend to be quiet. They are cautious around strangers and take a while to “warm-up” around those they are unfamiliar with. Once they feel comfortable with a person, they are very friendly and interactive.

When bringing a new Russian Blue into your home, give them plenty of time to get use to their new surroundings. Don’t immediately introduce your kitten to other pets. Give your new Russian Blue space. Your Russian Blue kitten may hide around the house when initially brought to its new home. Gradually your kitten will emerge as it feels more comfortable.

Russian Blues are very sensitive and intuitive when it comes to human emotions. Expect your kitten to comfort you when you’ve had a rough day or cheer you up after you’ve suffered a loss. Russian Blues tend to be sensitive to loud noise and thrive in a calm soothing environment. They often dislike direct eye contact as they can be quite timid.

Russian Blues also have a sweet, playful side. Like most kittens, your Russian Blue kitten will enjoy games of fetch and will love to climb high points in your home.

Care

Like most short-haired felines, Russian Blues need a minimal amount of fur grooming. Weekly or twice a week combing should be more than enough to keep your kitten in tip-top shape. Russian Blues have a double coat of thick, dense fur. Often, their coat is resistant to water penetration.

Bathing is necessary only if your kitten is excessively dirty, needs a flea dip, or if it performs in cat shows. As with most other kitten breeds, use a kitten specific shampoo. You can also experiment with specialty shampoos. Specialty shampoos that brighten blue coats can give your kitten’s fur an added sparkle.

Development

Russian Blues follow the same developmental path as most kittens. They are born with blue eyes that gradually change to green by the time they reach early adulthood. There are about three kittens in each Russian Blue litter.

Health Issues

Russian Blues are overall healthy kittens. They can live long and full lives. The average lifespan is around 15 years of age. And Russian Blues love to eat food. Therefore, it is important to maintain your kitten’s trim physique by monitoring their food intake and increasing their activity level. Keep an eye on your kitten’s waistline and play games with them to burn extra calories.

Remember…a Russian Blue kitten needs time to adapt to your home. Be patient and give your kitten all the time it requires.
