Why Kittens Need Homes

Kittens need homes. They don’t just need any old home. They need forever homes. Cats need homes with loving supportive cat friendly owners. With the birth rate of kittens in the tens to hundreds of thousands per year worldwide, there is a definite shortage of suitable owners and families for kittens.

So, what type of owner is the best for a young kitten? The ideal owner is one that:

Why Do Kittens Need Homes?

Kittens need to be placed in loving homes for a variety of reasons.

  • Overpopulation

Too many kittens with very few resources are the result of a lack of proper spay/neutering by cat owners. One cat with one litter can have the effect of bringing thousands of kittens into the world. Feral cats and kittens are the consequences of overpopulation. And they can lead short and harsh lives living on the streets.

  • Owners Can’t Keep Them

Sometimes owners simply cannot afford to keep their kittens. Other times housing relocation and feline behavioral problems are causes for owners to give up their cats. Sometimes a person living with a cat has allergies that prevent them from being able to keep a kitten.

  • Shelters Can’t Hold Them

Animal shelters are full of homeless cats and kittens. While they offer temporary respite for kittens without owners, they are no substitute for safe, cat-loving homes. Often, shelters become so full to capacity that they have to turn away owners looking to surrender kittens and cats.

  • Fosters Social Interaction

Kittens need homes because they offer kittens a chance to develop crucial social skills and companionship. Most cats thrive on attention and affection. Stable families can give even the most aloof kitten a sense of security and emotional well-being.

  • Protection from Cruelty

Caring homes provide kittens shelter from being abused. Kittens that lack stable homes face obstacles such as mean people, auto accidents, and medical experimentation. Owning a kitten prevents them from having to deal with the cruelties of life on the streets.

  • Prevents Strays

Stray kittens are different from feral kittens. Strays are usually abandoned or lost pets. Often these kittens have not been able to be reunited with their original owners. Strays are typically more socialized than feral cats. And cat make great house pets when given a little time to become reacquainted with humans.

  • Prevents Euthanasia

Each year thousands of cats and kittens are euthanized needlessly because of a lack of home placements. Many lives could be spared by simply making the choice to adopt a kitten or cat.
