Kitten Breeders:
How to Select the Right Breeder

Finding kitten breeders that are reputable and ethical is important when selecting a new kitten. A good breeder will make sure that a kitten is vaccinated, well-socialized, and is in top physical form before sending it to its new home.

Breeding cats and raising newborn kitten takes a lot of time for breeders. They must select the right cats for breeding and create an environment best to developing healthy cats. Most breeders do not become rich from breeding cats. Breeding them is usually done out of love for a specific breed.

Why Do I Need a Breeder?

If you’re looking for the average run-of-the-mill moggy or non-pedigreed kitten, a breeder is probably not necessary. You’d be better off visiting your local shelter or cat rescue organization. But, if you’re looking for the purr-fect Persian or Chartreux, you should look for a breeder.

Also, if you are looking for a cat to compete in cat shows and need a specific breed, it’s best to seek a knowledgeable breeder who can give you the ins and outs of cat shows.

Keep in mind that for certain rare breeds, you may be placed on a waiting list until the next unclaimed litter is available. A little patience goes a long way in getting the right kitten.

What Do I Look for in a Breeder?

When searching for a breeder, there are certain things to look for before committing to one breeder. A good breeder should be:

  1. Selective. Most reputable breeders will want to wait until a kitten at least 12 weeks old before adopting them out to a new owner. This gives kitten’s sufficient time for socialization. Ethical breeders will also scrutinize potential owners as to their background and reasons for adoption. So, don’t be offended. A good breeder wants to make sure you and your kitten will be a good fit.

  2. Cleanly. First-rate breeders house queens (mom cats) and kittens in clean settings. Check to see that the felines have enough food and water. And that there are adequate places to play as well as clean litter boxes.

  3. Knowledgeable about the breed. Is the breeder knowledgeable about the cats they breed? Can they sit and talk with you about your prospective pet? A breeder should be an expert at what they do. They should be able to talk with you at length concerning any health problems specific to the breed, dietary issues, and other topics related to the chosen breed. If you have doubts about a specific breeder, ask them for references from past clients.

  4. Providing a Written Health Guarantee. A great breeder will also give you a health guarantee and will even have you sign a contract letting you know your rights and responsibilities as a new owner. It should also state the kitten’s birth date, colors, registered name, and lineage information.
Where Do I Find a Kitten Breeder?

You can find a high quality kitten breeder by going to the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) website. They have a list of reliable breeders of varying cat breeds. You can also look for local cat associations in your area and ask them for list of breeders. Veterinarians are also a great resource for finding breeders. You may also have friends or associates that have used breeders and can offer assistance.
