History
The Japanese Bobtail kitten has its origins in the Far East. Popular Japan, they may have been imported from Korea in the sixth or seventh centuries. They began as cats of royalty and evolved into street cats. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that Japanese Bobtails arrived in the United States. They’ve been known and loved ever since.
Physical Appearance
Japanese Bobtails can have either long or short hair. However, both long and short haired kittens are known for their short stubby tails. Yet, each individual cat’s tail length and description varies. Tails can be up to 3 inches in length. Some tails are “pom-pom” like. Other tails are more corkscrew-like in shape. Some can even wag their tails as if they were full length.
Their back legs are shorter than their front legs. Japanese Bobtail cats have average sized muscular builds and high cheek bones. The cats have triangular shaped heads with slightly slanted oval shaped eyes. Japanese Bobtail feline bodies are lengthy and lean.
Colors
Japanese Bobtail cat coats come in a variety of colors and patterns. The most common colors are solid, bicolored, or tabby. Mi-ke (calico) was once a highly priced color for the Japanese Bobtails. However, currently, most colors are accepted.
Eye colors are also quite varied. Eyes are amber, green, blue, and even odd-colored.
Temperament
Japanese Bobtail cats love human companionship. They tend to have gentle soft voices and can be playful with their owners. The breed is highly intelligent and is very active. Japanese Bobtail kittens are notorious for getting into mischief once their owners are out of sight.
Because of their keep intelligence the breed is known for becoming bored quite easily and needs a lot of stimulation to keep them out of trouble. Japanese Bobtail cats love to retrieve toys and hunt. They are very curious creatures albeit well-behaved. They make great pets for an owner that loves active cats.
Development
A Japanese Bobtail kitten may take upwards of two years to fully develop. Like most other breeds, Bobtail kittens go through growth spurts and periods of slower growth. Allow kittens access to food so that they can graze throughout the day as needed.
Care
Japanese Bobtail cats have silky coats. There is little undercoat present on the coat. And the breed tends not to shed excessively. Simply brush or comb the fur weekly to remove knots and tangles. Luckily, the silky fur does not tangle easily. You can also use your hand to smooth down the fur as well.
It is best to leave the Bobtail feline’s tail alone when grooming. Little manipulation is best to help keep the tail from being hurt. Because the stubby tails can be quite sensitive, use caution when grooming. One can use their hand or a comb to gently groom the tail.
Health
Japanese Bobtail cats are a hardy and healthy breed. They tend to be blessed with long and healthy lives. And there are no major disorders associated with the breed.
