Making Homemade Cat Repellent

Looking for homemade cat repellent? No matter how much you love your cute kittens, you may need to keep them away from sensitive areas around the house. Or you may need to keep stray kittens from entering hazardous area outside your home. Whatever the reason, it is relatively easy to make cat repellent. Making cat repeller at home is affordable and can be created from non-toxic materials. You just need a few supplies and a little creativity.

Inside the Home

Around the house, I find that water makes some of the best homemade cat repellent. Most cats hate getting splashed with water. So, get a water pistol or spray bottle to squirt your kitten every time it enters an area it is not allowed. Bitter citrus products (lemon, lime) make excellent cat repellents. Just mix up 1 cup water to 1/3 cup citrus juice and spray around areas off limits to cats.

Typically, cats hate putting their paws on unusual textures. Bubble wrap, double-sided sticky tape, and plastic sheeting all help to repel cats.

Have extra mothballs lying around? Sprinkle them around areas to arrest kitten treading. Just be sure that your cat doesn’t eat or touch the mothballs.

Pungent perfume also makes a great cat stopper. Dab some any place you like around your home.

Outside the Home

Outdoors, you can make cat repellent out of wire, automatic sprinkler systems, textures (stones), sound devices like Cat Stop®, used coffee or tea grounds, vinegar, and even liquid soap. Fences, however, offer the best protection from unwanted feline visitors.

Many cats detest the feel of chicken wire. So, place it to block access. Water sprinkler systems work on one principle: cats hate being sprayed with water. Coffee or tea grounds sprinkled around plants work wonders to stop kittens in their tracks. Strong smelling vinegar also is also a great cat repeller.

Herbs

Herbs are a natural way to stop kittens in their tracks. Try using pepper, rosemary, lavender, citronella, or eucalyptus. Garlic and onions are not only wonderful to use in cooking, but they make awesome homemade cat repellents. Just slice some garlic and/or onions and soak in water. Spray the mixture where cats tread. In addition to using repellents, you can also use catnip to draw cats away from unwanted areas.
