History

The Devon Rex kitten originated in the 1950’s in Devon,England. The Breed originated from a stray male cat with curly hair. The curly hair resulted from a genetic mutation. The gene is recessive and both tomcat and queen must carry the gene to have curly-haired offspring.

Devon Rex cats have a distinctive appearance.

They have soft curly short hair. Some Devons even have slightly curled whiskers and eyebrows. Devon Rex cats also display full high cheek bones and a wedge shaped head. They have large prominent wide-set eyes and bat-like ears.

A muscular strong build makes up the Devon Rex’s form. They have hind legs that are somewhat longer in the back than the front. They have broad chests and small to medium sized frames with short muzzles. They also have small petite oval-shaped paws. Devons have long tapered tails and adult male Devons can weigh up to 10 lbs.

Colors

Devon Rex cats come in a variety of colors. And most patterns and colors are accepted by most cat associations. Smoke, solids, shaded, tabby, parti-color, and points are colors and patterns associated with Devon Rex. Devon Rex felines also have a variety of eye colors depending upon their coat colors.

Temperament

The Devon is a funny and charming breed. They love human companionship and adore attention. Devons have soft and quiet voices. And they love to eat and can have large appetites. Devons enjoy playing with their owners. And can be trained to play games of fetch and can be taught to tolerate leash walking.

Devons can tolerate travel quite well and get along well with children and pets. They are smart and sometimes stubborn cats when pressed to do things against their will. Devons also love to snuggle in warm environments. As they have few guard hairs and a single coat, they can become chilled rather quickly.

Care

Devons are relatively easy to care for. They have few guard hairs and do not shed as much as long haired breeds. Simply wiping the coat with a damp cloth or smoothing the coat with hands can go a long way in keep the Devon coat groomed. Devons rarely need baths; only if especially dirty. Keep in mind during bathing that Devons do not have much fur or thick fur. Keep them warm after bathing.

Teach Devon Rex kittens to tolerate bathing and nail clipping early in life and save yourself trauma later on. There is some evidence that the Devon is great for those with allergies. Apparently, the Devon coat is less likely to trigger allergy symptoms.

Development

Devon Rex kittens are born with smooth suede-like coats. They later develop thicker coats after roughly two months of age.

Health

Devon Rex cats are overall healthy cats. They can live long and productive lives, sometimes even twenty years. They are subject to some health problems.

  • Deafness

Deafness can occur in Devon Rex cats with white coats. This form of deafness is genetic and has no cure. However, blind cats can lead full lives.

  • Patella Luxation

Patella Luxation occurs when the knee cap moves out of its proper position. This condition can occur in Devon Rex cats. Patella luxation in Devon Rex felines is typically a hereditary disorder.

Remember…Devon Rex kittens need lots of attention from their owners. Make sure you can give your Rex plenty of TLC!
