Other stories tell tales of how the Chartreux were brought to France during the time of the Crusades. Because of their hefty physical composition, the chartreux may have been used to hunt and kill mice and other pests.

Physical Appearance

Chartreux kittens have study, muscular builds. Males can grow to be almost twice as large as females and have thicker coats. The Chartreux breed is known for pronounced jowls and large paws. In fact, Chartreux cats have strong muscular legs which enable them to be great climbers.

Chartreux felines have stunning gold, amber, and cooper colored eyes. The Chartreux breed also has a prominent abdominal area. They have large stomachs used for their high energy needs. Often, they are confused with blue British Shorthair kittens. Both “British Blues” and Chartreux felines have a similar appearance. However, among the many differences blue British Shorthairs do not have a double coat of fur.

Colors

The Chartreux is one of the true blue kittens. Its coat is a stunning range of soft gray-blue to rich deep-gray tones. Young Chartreux felines may have yet to develop a solid blue colored coat. They may have faint stripes in their coat and even lighter colored ring s in their tails. Blue lips and pinkish paw-pads make the Chartreux a sharp looking kitty!

Temperament

If you are looking for an even tempered mild-manner feline, a Chartreux kitten is the opitomy of a mellow cat. A Charteux kitten makes a great house pet and wonderful with families. However, it may select one family member as its favorite. Try not to take it personally. Chartreux Kitten-©iStockphotos.com/Eric Isselée

Chartreux kittens are relatively quiet, yet interactive felines. Instead of loud meow expect soft thrill and chirps. Don’t expect your Chartreux to be a lap kitten. They’re loving and affectionate, but are not super cuddly. The Chartreux breed is friendly to other household pets. Even your dog may find a new best friend in a Chartreux.

Care

As a short-haired breed, Chartreux felines need less coat care than a long-haired breed. Chartreux are born with two coats of fur: a dense heavy undercoat and outer coat. Their wooly undercoat needs regular grooming or it can mat. Run a comb through the undercoat and a brush to tame outer coat. Bathing your Chartreux kitten may not be a necessity unless it’s in a show or it gets excessively dirty.

The Chartreux is a naturally bulky breed. As a result, they can gain weight easily. Keep an eye on your kitten’s diet. If you notice excessive weight gain, see your vet about dietary modifications that can be made to help your kitten stay trim.

Health Issues

Did you know that Chartreux felines can suffer from joint and spinal irregularities due to heredity? Their strong build can hurt them when it comes to their joints. The Chartreux along with Devon Rex and Maine Coon cats can suffer from patella luxation or a dislocated kneecap. Keeping weight regulated is crucial to help prevent these problems.

Remember…Chartreux kittens can be a calm, wonderful addition to any home.
