Choosing the best veterinarians is of chief concern to most cat owners. After all, a great rapport with a vet can make or break your cat’s health.

Yet, we can’t all afford costly famous veterinarians. Hence, your local neighborhood veterinarian plays a pivotal role in giving your cat the finest health care possible. So, finding the right vet can be can save your cat and your budget.

The best time to search for a vet is before your cat becomes sick. And kitten hood is great time to begin to establish a working relationship with a vet. A well-seasoned veterinarian can get to know your kitten when it is young and head off any potential health problems early in its life.

You may be spending many years with your vet managing your cat’s health. So, take your time and do lots of research when it comes to selecting a veterinarian for your furry friend. Take plenty of notes and keep in mind the follow list of questions you should ask prior to choosing a vet.

Questions to Ask a Potential Vet

Don’t be afraid to ask others for recommendations of great vets in your area. Ask your co-workers, friends, neighbors and even cat breeders. Once you get a list of potential veterinarians, call or even visit the facility. Is it clean? Does it have an inviting atmosphere? Is it close to your home or are you willing to travel a bit for excellent pet care?

Here a few other ideas to consider:

  • Does the vet office provide animal boarding/kennels?
  • Do the staff and vet have a great rapport with their animals and owners?
  • Does the vet provide afterhours care?
  • Does the veterinarian make house calls?
  • Is price negotiable (flexible payment plans, etc)?
  • Is the vet up-to-date on the latest cat care techniques?
  • Is the clinic a cats-only veterinary office?
  • Does the veterinarian offer holistic care or traditional services?
  • Is the practice run by a sole vet or a multi-vet practice?
  • Are there veterinary specialists in the same clinic?
  • Is on site testing (lab work, x-rays) performed?
  • Is there a separate waiting area for cats?
While not all vet offices will have all of the criteria listed above, the key is finding a vet that you and your cat have a great rapport with. Does the vet even like cats? You may be surprised but some veterinarians may not even enjoy felines. So, don’t hesitate to find another vet if your cat seems less than pleased with your current veterinarian.

Cats Only Vets

Cat only veterinary offices may be an option for you and your pet. Cat specialized vets have chosen to focus solely on felines in their practice. The benefit is that these vets have lots of practice and education about the health and wellness needs of cats. They also offer quieter waiting areas, free of dogs and other distractions. If there is one in your area, visiting a cat-only clinic can be well worth your time.

Holistic Veterinarians

Another area to consider when choosing the best veterinarians is holistic veterinary medicine. Holistic veterinarians focus on using natural techniques and herbs to create wellness and equilibrium in a cat’s body. Energy healing, massage, and acupuncture may be a part of treatment plans. Holistic vets may be used if you prefer a more natural approach to cat health.
